Domain name registries and other stakeholders in the domain name value chain across the world employ one or more of several domain name protection mechanisms such as two-factor authentication, registry lock, DNSSEC and DNS redundancy to assist global brands to mitigate the risks of passing off, phishing and spoofing in an effort to prevent brand compromise and continuous intellectual property infringements.
Notwithstanding the availability of these measures, the same report found that more than 100 of the largest domain name companies in the world had a domain name security score of ‘0’.
Registries are also responsible for continuously building on existing rights protection mechanisms to mitigate against domain name abuse practices. ZACR is therefore pleased to announce that it will be launching its ‘Domain Name Blocking Services’ for its ZAcities (. cape town, .durban, .joburg) in collaboration with Brand Safety Alliance over the next few months.
The provision of this value-added service is endorsed by ICANN and is intended to provide brand and other domain name holders with the ability to protect derivatives of their primary domain name within more than 400 registries across the globe.
This intervention promotes proactive and robust strategies to safeguard brand integrity, prevent unauthorised use, mitigate reputational damage and reinforce brand authenticity to instil confidence in customers and partners. ZACR CEO, Lucky Masilela calls on major brands to send a clear message that they take their intellectual property seriously and will vigorously defend their brand identity against all domain name abuse practices.
